30 years of Piranha
(German version? Click here)
It all started in a cold winter when we brought the hot soul legend Rufus "Funky Chicken" Thomas to the Metropol in Berlin, followed by our first vinyl longplayer release "Beat! Apartheid".
Yes, it's true, and we are puzzled ourselves: we will turn 30 in 2017. Let us take you on a short journey through just the last one of 30 crazy years... a small (time) travel through the Piranha Universe.

International understanding and cultural diversity are more important than ever. This is exactly why our team of more than 30 Piranhas is active everywhere around the globe.
Together with you, we achieved a great deal this past year!
For that reason, we have compiled a small collection of our 2016 highlights for you.

Karneval der Kulturen New at Piranha
2016 saw Piranha
become the new organiser
of the Karneval der Kulturen. We have been a part of the event since the very beginning, 20 years ago – as musicians, in the jury or as inventor of the after-parade party "Long Night of the Sound Systems".
Lived integration and crossing borders is more important than ever and Karneval der Kulturen is the best example with more than one million visitors.
365 Days of Diversity With a free and open programme, Karneval der Kulturen continues to welcome EVERYONE.
As well as all the parties, we achieved some important
reorganisation last year. For example, we now have an advisory
committee and the "Haus des Karneval" for the year-round work of the carnival
For 2016, the Karneval finally accomplished solid financing: almost half of all costs were contributed by the Karneval itself, and the other half contributed by the state of Berlin.
Piranha Kultur Diversity takes center stage!
It all started with Heimatklänge, and today we curate and produce intercultural events like "Ramadan Nights". During this festival in 2016, we founded a network for cultural actors representing the diversity of Muslim-influenced arts and culture in Berlin!
In 2017, we will continue. Amongst other events, we will bring to you a new and international edition of our C3-Festivals!

Piranha Records Semer Ensemble
"...Rescued Treasure qualifies as this year’s most important piece of Jewish cultural history."
Jewish Herald Voice
With "Rescued Treasure – Live at Gorki Berlin", we presented the rescued musical treasures of Semer, the last Jewish label standing under the Nazi regime of the 1930ies.
Performed and recorded by a Berlin- based all-star ensemble under the direction of Dr. Alan Bern and produced by Ben Mandelson.

Forward in all directions with the... Piranha Roadshow!
We are not only travelling the world musically, but also "for real". Once again, this year again the Piranhas will swarm out to network, to consult and to learn.
In 2016, we attended over 50 international conferences, expos und professional meetings on five continents.
And some of them we organised ourselves...
Classical:NEXT Classical with a View
Within just five years we have established our classical music project Classical:NEXT as the leading network event within the community. 1,200 music professionals from all areas of classical and contemporary music met in Rotterdam this year.
A very special event marked the launch of the global "Indie Classical Network"
In 2017 it will continue, including the focus on "Diversity in classical music"
Piranha Consult Consultancy, WOMEX World Tour and more...
With Piranha Consult we support and catalyse exchanges of knowledge and culture, connecting musicians and music professionals all over the globe: Through capacity building (i.e. in Barbados with the support of the Caribbean Development Bank) and with project cooperations (i.e. with the TURN-Project "Lusafro" with Funkhaus Europa, Daniel Haaksman and partners from Lusophone Africa).
And together with our local partners of the WOMEX World Tour (see photo) from Africa, Brazil, China, Latin America and the Caribbean.
